      <image:title>3D Prints - Mood Lamp</image:title>
      <image:caption>This hanging mood lamp (mood chandelier?) uses an array of 10 neopixel LEDs to create lighting moods - stuff like alpine dawn, Caribbean sunset, or rainforest showers. Since the optical properties of these contexts are known, our fine-grained control over the LED’s allows us (my friend Tim and I) to precisely recreate them. In addition, the LEDs - 10 rings equals 160 point-sources in all - can emit blue wavelengths, the part of the light spectrum that counteracts the winter blues. Our color schemes breathe in and out, almost imperceptibly, according to mood selection. In the ideal scenario, they’d be controlled via app, and could do double duty as an “alarm clock”. But this is more proof of concept than final project, so we hard-coded the lighting settings. The cardboard superstructure is a variation on an origami pattern known as the Miuri-ori. I inscribed it via laser cutter with a geometric motif borrowed from the Topkapi Scrolls. The origami folds, frustratingly, did not want to hold the desired shape (a gently swooping arc) so I 3D-printed brackets that were then glued to vertices atop the lamp. The brackets, along with gravity, did the trick. This project took a ridiculous amount of time. (Thankfully, on the budget side, it came in under $150). Rather than refine it, Tim and I are making a second iteration with a radically different form factor - think table lamp - but similar functionality.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I've long been fascinated by the possibilities of full-spectrum light - light that can improve mood and wakefulness, especially in winter when sunlight is in short supply. When I discovered that inexpensive, full spectrum light bulbs were up for sale online, I quickly bought a set. Once I took their measurements, I began sketching up a lamp that could feature them - and check their intensity. The final product was gifted to my dad.</image:caption>

      <image:title>3D Prints - Moon Frame</image:title>
      <image:caption>The moon frame was one of my first 3D-prints. As you’ve probably guessed, it captures the phases of the moon. This was surprisingly difficult. The average synodic month is 29.53058 days, a number which doesn’t exactly lend itself to this grid format. Making a lot of astronomical assumptions (and maybe a few aesthetic ones) I decided that 2 of the 30 nights, or grid cells in this case, would be moonless. Given that, I extrapolated the percent of the moon that would be visible each night. I then compressed a model of the lunar surface down to a few centimeters, along the way exaggerating the topo - a process requiring no small amount of computing power! Due to the time-intensiveness of moon slicing in CAD, I decided to make a serious lie, for which I apologize: the second half of the crescent moons are simply an inversion of the first half, meaning that they’re mirror images of the actual surface of the moon. Astronomical fudge factors aside, the small Z-axis of my 3D-printer forced me to subdivide the frame into eight separate, interlocking pieces, which were superglued together. Insane readers will note that the bottom 1/5 of the Apollo 15 photograph has been faked using an image induction ML program.</image:caption>

With an accuracy of +/- 2 kg, it measures the force that can be exerted by one hand.       <image:caption>The Cloud House was designed as a second residence for a Northern Californian couple. The billowing concrete walls, which under normal circumstances would cost upwards of $1M to cast, can be printed for under $5K thanks to Total Kustom's concrete 3D-printing technology. Their form was computationally derived from a photo of clouds.  The residence is designed to be 3D-printed atop a traditionally poured concrete floor slab. Its interior is largely open-plan, with spatial divisions demarcated by thick canvas curtains. A rippling staircase leads to a lush roof deck. Vegetation is used throughout the property, from I-beam props to banister planters, as a visual counterbalance to the concrete.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Frustrated by being woken up at the wrong time and feeling groggy throughout the day, I built the Dream Machine. It's specially designed to wake me up at the exact right time in my sleep cycle. Not only does it measure my sleep, it wakes me up with music precisely calibrated to how well I've slept. This is all done thanks to a patent-pending mattress mesh, an imperceptible fabric placed below my pillow. The mesh passes information on my my sleep patterns to the alarm clock, which then decides when to wake me - all within a designated wakeup interval.</image:caption>

The direction we settled on, pending user interviews and market research, involves a traditional die stamped outer body, coupled with a forged and machined spindle.       <image:caption>This chair from the summer of 2020 is only incidentally an adirondack. The starting ingredients were few: five free days, a miter saw, a hammer, and a drill. I had three objectives in mind: create the simplest outdoor chair possible, overbuild it to prevent wobble, and include a reclining back. So, for perhaps the first time in my life, I decided that aesthetics would not just be subordinated, but completely ignored in the service of functional requirements. (Yes, this would be the project to reserve my special place in hell.) Of course, my plan quickly fell apart. The axle supporting the reclining seat, which in my CAD model looked so simple, would need custom-cut sleeve bearings. Hole placement for the knobs required my TI-86 calculator and a purpose-built jig. And I couldn’t help myself - what would a 3D-printed knob be without an embossing of my apartment crest? Should armrest placement be more De Stijl or Morris? Worst of all, my plan to make the seat out of wound nylon rope ran aground due to the whopping price tag. So I borrowed a friend’s sewing machine and got to work stitching a heavy-duty canvas seat and backing. Unfortunately, the weatherproof canvas proved to not be weight-proof. Off it went to the trash, replaced with a weatherproof, ripstop, non-stretch nylon. After exhausting my repertoire of swears many times over, efforts to wrap the rungs in foam were abandoned. After licking my wounds, I plan to build a matching footrest.</image:caption>

So I borrowed a friend’s sewing machine and got to work stitching a heavy-duty canvas seat and backing. Unfortunately, the weatherproof canvas proved to not be weight-proof. Off it went to the trash, replaced with a weatherproof, ripstop, non-stretch nylon. After exhausting my repertoire of swears many times over, efforts to wrap the rungs in foam were abandoned. After licking my wounds, I plan to build a matching footrest.</image:caption>
